Real-time surveillance for chronic conditions in Massachusetts using EHR data

چکیده
Introduction Public health agencies and researchers have traditionally relied on the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) and similar tools for surveillance of non-reportable conditions. These tools are valuable but the data are delayed by more than a year, limited in scope, and based only on participant self-report. These characteristics limit the utility of traditional surveillance systems for program monitoring and impact assessments. Automated surveillance using electronic health record (EHR) data has the potential to increase the efficiency, breadth, accuracy, and timeliness of surveillance. We sought to assess the feasibility and utility of public health surveillance for chronic diseases using EHR data using MDPHnet. MDPHnet is a distributed data network that allows the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to query participating practices’ EHR data for the purposes of public health surveillance (www.esphealth.org). Practices retain the ability to approve queries on a case-by-case basis and the network is updated daily.

Using Electronic Health Record Data for Healthy Weight Surveillance in Children, San Diego, California, 2014
Figure. The San Diego EHR-Based Healthy Weight Surveillance System includes, on average, 18.5% (standard deviation, 19.4%) of children per census tract. These preliminary, nonrepresentative data illustrate geographic variation in the prevalence of overweight and obese children. The maps demonstrate both the strengths and the challenges of using EHR-based data for surveillance. Abbreviation: EHR...
متن کاملRisk prediction to inform surveillance of chronic kidney disease in the US Healthcare Safety Net: a cohort study
BACKGROUND The capacity of electronic health record (EHR) data to guide targeted surveillance in chronic kidney disease (CKD) is unclear. We sought to leverage EHR data for predicting risk of progressing from CKD to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) to help inform surveillance of CKD among vulnerable patients from the healthcare safety-net. METHODS We conducted a retrospective cohort study of ad...
متن کاملMonitoring Prevalence, Treatment, and Control of Metabolic Conditions in New York City Adults Using 2013 Primary Care Electronic Health Records: A Surveillance Validation Study
INTRODUCTION Electronic health records (EHRs) can potentially extend chronic disease surveillance, but few EHR-based initiatives tracking population-based metrics have been validated for accuracy. We designed a new EHR-based population health surveillance system for New York City (NYC) known as NYC Macroscope. This report is the third in a 3-part series describing the development and validation...

reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited. Objective To document the current evidence base for the use of electronic health record (EHR) data for syndromic surveillance using emergency department, urgent care clinic, hospital inpatient, and ambulatory clinical care data. Introduction Historically, syndromic surveillance has primarily involved the use of near real-...
متن کاملNear real‐time vaccine safety surveillance using electronic health records—a systematic review of the application of statistical methods †
PURPOSE Pre-licensure studies have limited ability to detect rare adverse events (AEs) to vaccines, requiring timely post-licensure studies. With the increasing availability of electronic health records (EHR) near real-time vaccine safety surveillance using these data has emerged as an option. We reviewed methods currently used to inform development of similar systems for countries considering ...
